Frequently Asked Questions: Rough-Sawn Lumber
What is the difference between Green and Dried pine?
-
Green Pine: This is freshly cut wood with high moisture content. It is easier to nail and more affordable, making it perfect for barns, fencing, and outdoor structures.
-
Dried/Seasoned Pine: This wood has had time to air-dry or be seasoned. It is more stable and less likely to shrink or warp, making it the better choice for interior projects, siding, or furniture.
Do I need to treat rough-sawn lumber for outdoor use?
-
While species like Eastern Red Cedar have natural rot resistance, pine should generally be treated with a stain, sealant, or preservative if it will be exposed to the elements. Because it’s rough-textured, it soaks up protectants much better than smooth store-bought wood.
Do I need to treat rough-sawn lumber for outdoor use?
-
Yes! We provide custom log sawing. For the best results, logs should be freshly cut, clear of mud and rocks, and—most importantly—free of metal.
What happens if my log has metal in it?
-
Metal (nails, wire fencing, etc.) ruins expensive sawmill blades instantly. We do our best to check, but if we hit metal in your log, there is a $450.00 blade replacement fee. While we do have a metal detector it, like anything mechanical, can fail to work.
